This morning after breakfast, enjoy free time this morning for shopping in White Sulphur Springs. Head to Main Street where you can check out all the quaint shops and enjoy lunch on your own. The afternoon features a most unusual history tour. You visit The Greenbrier’s Cold War Bunker built by the Eisenhower Administration. It was a Fall Out Shelter for Congress in the event of a Nuclear Attack. This secret facility existed for 30 years, in plain sight, yet hidden from both hotel employees and guests. It’s a fascinating story and you will learn how the pan- tries were stocked and replenished with fresh produce and supplies. At any moment there was enough fresh water and food here to support the entire House & Senate for 60 days. Dinner is included this evening at a local restaurant. (B,D)

Thursday, September 10, 2026

Cass Scenic Railroad w/ Lunch – Elkins, WV

Following breakfast and hotel check-out, travel to Cass for your first ride through the beautiful mountains of West Virginia on the Cass Scenic Railroad. A day of great adventure begins as you motor north into the Alleghenies, your destination is the townsite of Cass. It looks much today as it did in its heyday as a company logging town. Restored company houses line the hillside. The Historical Museum and the Cass Showcase with its diorama and film provide interpretation. You’ll pick up a box lunch at the Company Store, and then it’s an exciting moment as you board a steam locomotive and pull out of the depot. This was a logging route with grades as steep as 11%, you’ll climb through deep forest with a beauty as old as the hills and then suddenly you will break out above the timber and enjoy a view of West Virginia that is beyond words. You are at Bald Knob, the third highest peak in West Virginia. There was a point on the climb that if had been paying attention you would have noticed that you entered a completely different ecosystem because of the change in the trees, flowers and atmosphere. End the day in Elkins, WV for a three-night night stay at the Hampton Inn. Dinner is included this evening at a local restaurant. (B,D)

Day 5:
Friday, September 11, 2026

Greenbrier Wilderness Train w/ Lunch – Green Bank Radio Astronomy Observatory

Start the day with breakfast and a return trip to Cass, WV and see what makes West Virginia Wild and Wonderful! Enjoy a scenic ride today on the Greenbrier Wilderness Train into the wilderness of the Greenbrier River Valley. Framed by forested hills on both sides of the river, this remote, rugged, unpopulated region is home to Bald Eagles, Osprey, Black Bear and Coyotes. Stop in Durbin for lunch. The afternoon includes a visit to the Green Bank Radio Astronomy Observatory. At Green Bank you find a valley filled with giant satellite dishes. This is the National Radio Astronomy Observatory intentionally located in one of America’s most quiet spots. Here scientists are listening for sounds from space, and you will tour the facility. Dinner is included this evening at a local restaurant. (B,L,D)

Day 6:
Saturday, September 12

New Tygart Flyer w/ lunch – West Virginia Railroad Museum – Gandy Dancer Theater Dinner & Show

After breakfast, today’s wilderness excursion is the New Tygart Flyer, departing from the town of Elkins. This route features an “S” curve tunnel, a high bridge and miles of unspoiled mountain views. The vintage diesel-powered locomotive climbs along the cascading Shavers Fork of the Cheat River to the High Falls which are accessible only by train. The closest road is literally five miles away. Enjoy the view relaxing aboard our comfortable climate-controlled passenger coaches. A boxed lunch is included today with your excursion. This afternoon, explore the West Virginia Railroad Museum, located in the historic Darden Mill. The Mill is on the corner of First Street and Railroad Avenue, two blocks south of the heart of downtown and the old railway depot. The Darden Mill was built in 1902, on land purchased from the West Virginia Central and Pittsburgh Railway Company. It was a grain mill between 1902 and 1943, run first by the Elkins Milling Company then by the Darden Company.  Your evening entertainment begins with a meal at The Gandy Dancer Dinner Theatre. After a wonderful plated dinner, sit back and listen to the fabulous Mountain Memories Show Band as they serve up a 2 hour Branson-style show with music from the 50’s – today featuring Country, Pop, Motown, Gospel, and Patriotic along with family-friendly comedy and amazing dancers. The Gandy Dancer offers a show that’s guaranteed to have you dancing in your seat, laughing until you cry, touching your heart and giving you memories that will last a lifetime. (B, L, D)
